ART CLASSES

Art Classes at Studio J start at 16 months of age with the "First Marks" series.  More advanced students up to 12 years old will create their own masterpieces in the "Paint and More" series.  Try art at Studio J, you will be back for more!

First Marks:  Toddler Enrichment Class

Ages 12 months  up to age 3
  •  This class is an enrichment class to begin programming their young minds toward language development, creativity and music.  You can't begin too young.  Mom or a caregiver is with them and the class is really for her too. You will learn songs, fingerplays, stories to share with your child.  It's a great opportunity for a first time Mom to learn and meet other Moms and it's a special time for a Mom of other children to have a place to focus on their toddler.
  • Some songs and words will be shared in Spanish as well as to  predispose children to learning foregin languges.  Research shows that exposing young children to another languge will aid in the acquistion of foreign languages at an older  age.

  • This class will expose your little ones to various media that are safe for them at their age. You will be amazed at what they are capable of at such a young age.   They will explore fingerpaint, tempera paint, water color, collage, clay and more.
  • They will also enjoy a song time with motions and a "free to create" exploration time.  They will develop an eagerness to engage in the art of discovery as they are exposed to tactile experiences like sand, water, dough made from flour and more.  They also enjoy the social aspects of playing with the large foam blocks,  building with blocks, chasing bubbles and drawing on the group mural.
  • Join the excitement as they make their first marks. You will be with them as they enjoy many firsts!
  •
Jackson Pollock is known as the artist who "paints like a toddler" because of the splattering style of painting he is famous for.    Bring your toddler in so they can create their own originals!

Two’s & Threes Create:
Ages 15 months  to 44  months
  •  Children are encouraged toward a love of artistic exploration through using a varietyy of media, including painting on canvas, pastels, charcoal pencils, fingerpaint, tempera paint, water color, crafting, collage, clay and dough.
  • Classes follow a thematic approach with the emphasis being on the process rather than the product. An example of a theme might be a focus on texture and textiles, hues of red, the circle shape, etc.
  • Their parent or other grown up will always be with them encouraging, role modeling and joining in the fun.
  • Come prepared to get messy.
  • "Free to create" periods, two projects, stories, songs, and more will make up our time together.

Studio Explorers:

              3 years to 7 years

  •  Children create their own special masterpieces while being encouraged to discover their creative side.
  • They will enjoy various open ended activities together as well as creating with clay, wire, painting on canvas, and working with markers, pastels, fingerpaint, temper paint, water color, crafting, collage and dough.
  • They will also enjoy sociaizing during the play portion of the class as they play with blocks, the large tactile table and various games and activities as well as some songs, stories, fingerplays and drama activities.

Sibling Art Classes:

This class combines aspects of all three; First Marks, Two's Create and Studio Explorers.  Children explore materials with their parent present.  Various ages will experience materials in different ways.

Hard at work on my version of a Jackson Pollack painting!!!

In the sibling class children as young as 18 months and as old as 6 work at their developmental age level creating, experimenting with colors and exploring the materials!  We did use boxes so when we dripped our paint in the Pollack style we kept most of it on the canvas or the box.

Yes, we got paint on our hands but oh what fun! We are making memories where we learn it is okay to get messy while we create our masterpieces.  We looked at pictures of Jackson Pollack's work as well.  It's so amazing that we have parents who are willing to get a little messy while offering their child such memorable experiences.

Don't worry, it's not this messy every week. :)

Paint and More:

         4 years to 9 years

  • This class is a group that meets once a week after school. It is more of a studio art experience rather than a class.  All materials are provided and the children will work on painting on canvas and the use of other media.
They will also enjoy working with other media including painting on canvas, pastels, crafting, collage, creating with wire, water color and more.
  • Also a class for older students 12 to 16
